Salesman

SalesmanSalesman are an Austin-based band closely related to Lord Buffalo. The former group’s frontman, singer-songwriter Devin James Fry is the drummer of the latter, whose frontman is the drummer of the former. Nice symmetry indeed.

Both songs embedded here are from Salesman’s upcoming EP ‘The Wasp‘. Track 1 is hugely misleading though. That is the only one in the collection that sounds like a “normal” folk song. The rest of the EP is bravely experimental, deconstructing traditional song structures, and utilizing sounds that are normally considered recording errors, like tapping the microphone, digital clipping and so on. It all couldn’t be further from the mood of the opening track. And that’s what’s really great about it. In a sense, they do with folk music what Radiohead did with rock. I’m really curious to find out where it’ll lead them in the future.
